Planning a Kedarnath yatra? Discover the ideal months, weather conditions, crowd levels, and insider tips to plan your perfect pilgrimage to this sacred Himalayan shrine.

Kedarnath is open from May to November, with the temple doors closing after Diwali for winter. Here's a month-by-month breakdown:

May – June (Best Season)

The most popular time to visit. Weather is pleasant (8–20°C), snow has largely melted, and darshan queues are manageable in May. By June, crowds increase significantly. Expect lush green meadows and crystal-clear views of the Himalayan peaks.

July – August (Monsoon Season)

Heavy rainfall makes the trek challenging and sometimes dangerous. Landslides are common. Not recommended unless you're an experienced trekker. The temple remains open but expect closures due to weather.

September – October (Second Best Season)

Post-monsoon clarity means stunning views. October is considered ideal — fewer crowds, stable weather, and autumn colors. The trek is at its most beautiful in October.

Key Practical Tips

  • Book helicopter tickets in advance — they sell out weeks ahead
  • Start the trek early (4–5 AM) to avoid afternoon clouds and congestion
  • Altitude sickness affects some travelers — acclimatize at Gaurikund
  • Book accommodations at Kedarnath at least 2 weeks in advance in peak season
  • Carry warm clothing even in May — nights drop to 0–3°C
  • Best Way to Reach Kedarnath

  • By helicopter: Phata/Guptkashi to Kedarnath (~8 min, ₹4,500–6,000)
  • By trek: Gaurikund to Kedarnath (19km, 6–8 hours)
  • By pony/doli: Available for elderly or differently-abled (₹800–1,500)
  • Our Recommendation

Book your trip for September 15 – October 20 for the perfect balance of good weather, manageable crowds, and stunning views. Avoid the last 2 weeks of October as temperatures drop dramatically.
